Below are some highlights of Commissioner Jackson's record on the major issues that face the 2nd District and Lawrence County:
Education
Voted to remove harmful, mold-filled portable classrooms from South Lawrence Elementary School and across Lawrence County
Voted for new permanent classrooms that will give Lawrence County's children the safe and learning conducive environment they need and deserve.
Supported efforts which made it possible for elementary schools to offer advanced classes such as keyboarding which will better prepare students for high school.
As Chairman of the Technology Committee, worked with the School Board to add over $1 million of new technology to our school system, giving student's the tools they need in the 21st Century.
Supported the efforts to create the Loretto High School welding program and virtual enterprise class.
Voted to put a new roof on Loretto High's Gym.
Sponsored legislation to create scholarships that would reward students going into public service.
Sponsored legislation that would have resurfaced South Lawrence's parking lot.
Taxes and Fiscal Responsibility
Voted to lower Lawrence County's property tax rate from $3.02 to $2.73.
Along with County Clerk Chuck Kizer, supported legislation removing the wheel tax sticker from county plates, saving the county valuable funds.
As Chairman of the local Democratic Party, has called for an end to the Democratic Primary, which would save the county $30,000 every election year.
Has advocated on numerous occassions to reduce the pay of county commissioners to help fund other vital things within county government.
Sponsored legislation that would have cut $12,000 from the FY 2010-2011 budget.
Twice sponsored a resolution that called for replacing the unfair property tax with a more fair form of taxation.
Voted in favor of the property tax freeze for senior citizens.
Advocated the idea of going line by line in each year's budget to weed out wasteful and unnecessary spending.
Voted in favor a resolution which called for a spending freeze on all capital projects.
Crime
Was as leader in establishing the temporary jail facility in Lawrence County, which has saved the county over a million dollars by getting prisoners which were housed around the state, back in Lawrence County.
Has been an advocate for a community faith based initiative, which would help address root causes of crime in our county.
Sponsored and passed legislation urging state and federal leaders to fund local meth efforts.
Jobs
Has called for new bold strategies to create jobs such as giving local companies funds to hire new employees and paying local companies to train unemployed workers.
Voted in favor of giving the City of Lawrenceburg land to build a spec. building to lure new jobs to Lawrence County.
Voted in favor of new innovative and aggressive polices that have attracted new businesses such as Bertolini and Precision Laser to our county.
Was a leader in the passage of the Lawrence County Economic Impact Plan which contained tax increment financing which give Lawrence County an extra tool in recruiting jobs.
Voted in favor for investments and incentives for our hometown businesses, which have allowed Modine to add 200 new jobs to their operation.
Voted in favor of building a new spec building and constructing the North Industrial Park which is a first step in recruiting industry to our county.
Voted in favor of the Loretto High School welding program which partnered the county commission, school board and local business leaders. The program allows students to become certified welders while still in high school, thus benefiting the students as well as local businesses.
Sponsored and passed legislation that required Lawrence County Government to hire Lawrence County citizens when they have equal qualifications for a job.
Energy
Sponsored and passed a resolution requiring all new county buildings to be equipped with energy efficient lighting which will save taxpayers money and help conserve energy.
Established the Lawrence County Energy Efficiency Committee, which he chairs.
Illegal immigration
Put a proposal forth to curb illegal immigration on the local level by targeting those who harbor illegal residents.
Voted in favor of a resolution that would deny contracts to companies who knowingly hire illegal immigrant workers.
Government accountability
Put forth a resolution that would require county commissioners to show up to meetings to earn their salary.
Proposed legislation that would require hearings into nominees to unelected positions within county goverment.
Sponsored legislation that would move regular session meetings of the county commission to other areas around the county to garner input from more citizens.
Water lines
Helped earn a major CBDG grant that would run rural water lines in Lawrence County. The areas of Adair and Farris Lane in the 2nd District were included in this grant.
Sponsored and passed a resolution encouraging utility districts to join with the county to run rural water lines.
Sponsored and passed a resolution urging Senators Corker and Alexander and Congressman Davis to help get appropriation for water line extension for emergency areas.
Technology
Was a leader in the total revamping of technology in schools (computers, software and hardware) to the tune of $1.2 million.
Was a leader in establishing a new wireless network which has enhanced county government communication and lowered costs.
As Chairman of the Technology Committee, helped establish a new county website that is professional looking and provides valuable information to county citizens.
Infrastructure
Passed a resolution that would give the road department two million dollars for infrastructure and equipment to help maintain county roads.
Proposed a couty "infrastructure bank" that would provide funding to much needed infrastructure needs around the county based on importance.
Voted consistently to give the road department the tools they need to maintain current paved roads and continue to expand the tar and gravel program.
Public Safety
As a member of the Ambulance Study Committee, voted in favor of legislation which called for an EMS system which costs less and is more efficient.
Voted for the addition of the fourth ambulance crew, which will be stationed in Northern Lawrence County and will be able to service Summertown, Ethridge and surrounding communities.
Voted to fully fund all volunteer fire departments.
Voted to hire additional police to help protect and serve Lawrence County.
